Castlevania The Animated Series review

Created by: Adi Shankar (Bootleg Universe, Shankar Animation)
Sam Deats, Adam Deats (Powerhouse Animation)
Also support by Frederator
Written by Warren Ellis (former writer)
Music by Trevor Morris
Licensed by VIZ Media
Released by Netflix
Based on the series by Konami

Many years ago, a series began based on classic monster films. Leaps of faith, peril, platforming, and adventure. It laid the ground work for games that would players to their limits. From 2D sprites, to an evolving world, with more colors, to a soundtrack that could deliver a more immersive experience beyond limitations of the system. From then to now, to the 2.5D and 3D realm, adventures kept us thriving to take back the night from a never ending curse.

The animated series takes place within Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (released on the Famicom, and NES). With the lead being Trevor, finding allies in unexpected places. But this time it was no longer a solo adventure, but banding together with other characters that had the same focus as he did. Crossing numerous places, terrain turned into a nightmarish hellscape, and unfathomable horrors that awaited them.

But back then, were limitations of what a game could perceive as a story. It was from a to b, while exploring within a 2D plane. Beyond what is possible today.. the Animated series however takes it to another level.

Castlevania Season I Trailer

Season I "Beginnings" / "Vampire Killer"
From the introduction of Dracula, and Lisa, to the atmosphere of a vast city known as Targoviste. They form a bond, a love, a union. With Lisa's journey to learn medicine, being mentored by an unexpected being, that helps guide her to learn a useful skill. Yet the outside world sees her differently. Then the worst thing happens... and it brings out Dracula's dark side. Giving them an amount of time to unveil their leader.. but no on speaks.. so it is done

Summoning a horde of monsters, they lay waste to any who were eyes of this misdeed. They tear apart any and all onlookers, limb from limb. (Also to note, this series is not for the faint of heart, or squeamish, it gets gory, and bloody, but within reason)

With the town in silence, those that survive, which is very few. As the monsters seek the one who gave the order to take a life.. in return.. loses theirs.

We meet Trevor Belmont, an unlucky gentleman. Just getting thru another journey, seeking a place to drink, rest, and try to get into trouble. But that follows him.. leading to an unexpected destiny. Finding a group called the Seekers, a group of mages that study ancient magics of elemental power. However it is never written, but a skill handed down from one generation to the next. In the catacombs, Trevor comes upon a place filled with statues, until running into a Cyclops (this creature has the ability to turn living things into stone, similar to Medusa. Once you gaze into its eyes, its too late). Upon dueling with this nasty beast, the one he is sent to recover.. awakens from her stone prison. Sypha Belanades. She is the Speaker, that her teacher sent Trevor to rescue.

But they are not alone, as a tomb close by holds something inside.. the son of Dracula. A duel takes place, where they are tested, mind, body, and soul. Finding out they are fighting the same destiny.. they band together. And this is where our journey truly begins.

How to summarize.. four episodes. Fantastic voice cast, amazing music, visuals, special effects, and the art style just grabs your attention. Even though presented as a short mini-series. It would later gain additional episodes in future seasons.

There is no way to note a few words about the voice talent. It is on another level. Each character comes to life with personality, wit, demeanor, strength, energy, pain, sorrow.. all of the feels. The heroic trio:
Trevor (Richard Armitage), Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso), and Alucard (James Callis). These three deliver a phenomenal performance, from season one to beyond. Plus the supporting voice cast is also extraordinary.  Dracula (Graham McTavish), The Bishop (Matt Frewer), The Elder (Tony Amendola) and many more.

Character highlights:
Trevor (played by Richard Armitage)
A reluctant hero, loves to drink, fight, but also has a heritage, plus a name that is not highly regarded. From tackling monsters, to saving the day, you can count on him. But when it comes to evil, he will be there in a heartbeat. No matter the foe, will fight to the bitter end.

Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso)
A mage, of the Speaker clan. They travel abound the lands, seeking to teach those that have an open heart. But only those chosen can use their gifts for the greater good. Her family is well known in secret, as their knowledge of the use of magics is kept hidden, not printed, but only spoken within small circles. When she is saved by Trevor, and joins in his journey, she will never be the same.

Alucard (James Callis) "flying vampire Jesus"
The son of the Vlad Tepes, and Lisa. Made of love, yet a creature of the night. Awakened by Trevor, and Sypha as they come upon his coffin. This savior is more than he seems. A formidable fighter, swordwielder, master of transformation, also has a heart. Banding together with Trevor, and Sypha, becomes the ultimate adventure. As they begin crafting a legend, that will be known for many ages to come.

Dracula (Graham McTavish)
Vlad Tepes, the dark lord, the Bat. A man known in many circles, but few know him for truly what he is. Not just a monster, a being with a heart, fell in love with a human, only to lose her because of what humans fearing they do not understand. To become a monster, seeking revenge, while being a part of the giant chess board that tests everything in his will to conquer humanity.

Lisa (Emily Swallow)
A compassionate heart and soul, seeks to aid those in need. Yearns to learn medicine to help the sick, and dying. Finding out that there is more beyond her reach, lands upon the Castle to meet Vlad. And once time passes, they become good friends, eventually more. But her end.. is also where this story begins, in a twisted turn of fate. Becoming the reason why Vlad's campaign of tyranny takes hold, because of his lost and true beloved.

Season II Trailer

Season II "Bloody Tears"

The tides of change ripple through monster, and human alike. Where the bonds between the heroes, and villains is challenged. As the hierarchy emerges, showing its cards, playing it directly about face. Examining more of the Vampire world, an atmosphere different from our own. The key players Isaac and Hector come into place.

But while things are in motion, the trio finally face Dracula who's mind and emotions no longer hold as they once did before. Becoming a monster of his former self, fighting his intent and compassion. Only to be taken down by his son.. changing the world forever

Key Character highlights:
Carmilla (voiced by Jaime Murray)
One of the legendary sisters. Powerful, calculating, and manipulative. She seeks to destroy anything with a foundation created by the old men. A lust for control, blood, and the ability of her kind to take over the world.

Godbrand (voiced by Peter Stomare)
One of the old ones, brunt, brutish, nasty attitude unless he gets what he wants. One of the many leaders within the High Court. Seeks to conquer humanity, and take over as leader of the entire clan. While Carmilla keeps him at arms length, just like Vlad. No one really likes this man, because of his attitude. But he gets the job done. A swordwielder, and a bit of a talker.

Hector (voiced by Theo James)
One of two forgemasters, these humans can  bring monsters to life, thru alchemy. From the body of a corpse, reanimating with the energy from the other side. Manifesting beings of hell. Serving the Vampires, as a way of creating their vast army. Answering to those with power, his will it not his own, until things change later on.

However in this season, he is more set aside as a pet, taken from a conquest during the Vampire's campaign taking over the lands. Serving under them, breaking him, but he is not one to take things easily.

Isaac (voiced by Adetokumboh M'Cormack)
The second foragemaster, like Hector, but reluctant to serve someone. Takes back his power, skills, and knowledge to find his own identity, reason for existence, while learning more about himself. Including the monsters he has created, as it turns out they have a will of their own. But will protect him at any cost. Also turns out he has a heart.. comes into play much later.

Season III Trailer

Season III "Rise of the Sisterhood"

As the journey keeps the heroic trio separate, Trevor and Sypha get closer, while Alucard slips away unsure if he is losing his mind. Until a pair of twins comes upon Alucard, seeking a teacher, to learn from someone of the Vampire kind, their strength's weaknesses, and connect on another level.

Also Saint Germain makes his move, upon meeting Trevor and Sypha. A man from another place, and time. With a quick wit, and dry sense of humor, adding more mystery wherever he goes. Much later, becoming someone they trust, yet he has his own agenda.

While the three are on their own paths, the Sisterhood comes into play, taking over the High Court, with news of Dracula's death spread like wildfire. Pieces of the board go into motion, as other vampires seek refuge, or a bond to those from other lands.

The campaign leads to unexpected places.. Lenore, the younger sister takes in Hector as her own. They form a twisted bond, yet there is something held deep. While Isaac seeks retribution for what he's done under the Dark Lord, finding his own path, which leads to a battle of a manifestation beyond words. The world is a different place, yet holds many secrets.

Key Character highlights:
Lenore "the peacemaker" (voiced by Jessica Brown Findlay)
One of the four sisters. Throughout the known lands across the vampire court. She is someone who communicates with the other tribes. But her other intentions with Hector, from treating his as a pet, to something more, grows with every moment they lock eyes with each other.

Striga "the fighter" (voiced by Ivana Millcevic)
The brutish, yet beautiful, and powerful fighter. She is the backup, but also could be the leader. Armed, deadly, yet strong. She looks out for her kind, or those she loves. In a heartbeat, can cut her foes down asunder.

Morana "the tactician" (voiced by Yasmine al Massri)
A being who studies the environment, maps, nature, atmosphere. Planning every move. But also is a critical thinker of every situation. Happens to be in love with Striga for many years.

Saint Germain (voiced by Bill Nighy)
A being from another time and space. Speaks in riddles, yet seeks knowledge of the occult, and supernatural. With a bizarre demeanor, do not judge him, for he is a smart thinking, quick witted individual.

The Judge (voiced by Jason Isaacs)
A man, who has overseen a sleepy town for many generations. A judge, jury, and the latter. While the people that live in his town are those that seek refuge, to kids getting into trouble. Numerous people have gone missing, some are questioning what is happening. And he might have something sinister hiding under that friendly exterior.

Sala (voiced by Navid Negahban)
A leader of a band of travelling priests. However these people are not the friendly kind. Their literature filled with various languages, dialects, and beliefs all connect to the supernatural. Not your ordinary bunch, they are more of a cult like sect. Their mission? to resurrect a certain being to return to this plane of existence

Sumi (voiced by Rila Fukushima)
Taka (voiced by Toru Uchikado)
A sister, and brother, a pair of monster hunters from the Far East. Travelling many miles, happen to arrive at the old haunt of Dracula's castle, where Alucard resides. Seeking to learn from the best, they seem trustworthy, eager to learn skills, knowledge of the past.. and something more which tears into Alucard's heart.

Although Season III was a bit controversial to the fandom, it was a noteworthy departure. From start to finish, it was a different series, giving the spotlight to other characters aside from the trio we came to love. But within reason, growing the mythos, there is a vast world to explore. From a man lost, to a band of sisters reclaiming their hierarchy, to hunters from a far off land. This season as some would describe was more "horny' than any other, yes there is lots of sensual moments, but it also gives the characters a dynamic presence. The intention was to deliver more energy, heat, and passion. It may be a mature themed series, but it was unafraid to take a deep dive into what drives us human or vampire, to feed that fire inside of us all.

Season IV Trailer

Season IV "Evergreen"

"Back to where it all began" Sypha says as they arrive at Targoviste.
The final season takes every character arc, and wraps it in a dynamic way. Some gain redemption, others find power in themselves, and find their paths change throughout the story. No two characters are similar, human or vampire alike. From relationships growing, to some falling apart, and some building a new foundation. This season is all about bonds, those gained, and broken, or choices made that impact those around them.

From character dynamics, to shifts in tone, the battle of light vs dark constantly changing. From season one to four, the connections made all tie together here. Introducing new characters, yet establishing their personality, energy, and connections to the main cast. And also saying goodbye to characters we've come to love or dislike. This is where the journey ends..

Key character highlights:
Varney (voiced by legendary actor Malcolm McDowell) A member of the high court, during Vlad's reign. From London, his journey has crossed all over the world. A mysterious energy, unlike other members, which have gone into seclusion due to Trevor and Sypha's takedown of their kind since the death of Dracul. But who he truly is... that is another story

Ratko (voiced by Titus Welliver) Another member of the high court of Vlad, a watchdog that keeps an eye out for trouble. Also known as one of the toughest hunters, but also a formidable fighter.

Greta (voiced by Marsha Thomason) A leader of a village, caught in the middle of the conquest from the monsters sent in by orders of Carmilla. Forms a bond with Alucard, after he answers a letter asking for aid. Building something together, there is something special here between them.

How it all comes together, and creates a satisfying conclusion. That is part of the journey worth taking. From the animation, to the light and dark themes, plus exploration of the vast world, and beyond what is seen, but felt. To the writing which gives the characters depth, growth, acceptance, trust, and the unexpected. And the music which mixes new music, plus brings back familiar favorites.

This final season is a marvel from episode one, to ten. The balance of story, character arcs, to brutal battles, and the shifts within the growing narrative as everything changes or impacts one another. There are moments of clarity, compassion, understanding, and a reason for what drives each character to meet their end goal. Whether hero/heroine, or villain/villainess they each have a role to play, or for some to find a reason for being, or to cause chaos.

The finale delivers all of the feels, emotions, hype, wonder, and the unexpected. Like a game, where the heroes finally make it to their destination, take on the last area, and finally the end boss. The one who orchestrated this entire scenario. The journey ends here.. and where it could go next, there are so many possibilities.

As a fan of this long running series, I am honored to write this article. To the entire Castlevania Netflix fam, thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Everyone that made it come to life, from art, to cg, music, writing, directing, and choreography. You are all incredible, especially in times like these. We do not deserve this amazing work of art, you all brought to life.

But also the joy within the finale.. I cannot describe every bit of feels. I am surprised I did not enter any spoilers for this summary article. Because it is worth watching for anyone that enjoys a tale of light, dark, and the unknown journey ahead. Until that moment, something special that is so remarkable, those darn onions.

To all the lives you've touched with this astonishing series. The joy, pain, sadness, all of the feels. Every one of us fans, and including the CV fam themselves. We are all connected to this adventure. There is nothing else like it, nor will ever be. Season IV, a conclusion, not a goodbye, but we will meet again.

Again, thank you for this marvelous work of art, storytelling, and something that changes the way we see video games forever. And I truly mean that from my heart.

Anime review: GITS SAC 2045

From the creative team behind:
Stand Alone Complex, 2nd Gig,
And Solid State Society
Production I.G.
Sola team
Music by former composers of the Metal Gear Solid Series

Going to start a brief summary..
Okay so it's best you are caught up with Stand Alone Complex, and 2nd Gig before hand because its vague on backstory. It's set after the mainline series.

The Section 9 crew (as of now former S9)
Major Kusanagi = team leader, with a past, yet has conviction to do good, yet fighting to be herself.
Batou = second in command, also one of the major's longtime friends for years
Saito = the sniper, also longtime friend of the major, and a legendary marksman
Paz and Bohma = the b team, but also investigation crew
Ishikawa = the technician, you ask, he knows everything you need info about, used to own a Pachinko parlor, but that's another story
Aramaki = the old man, the former head of the team, also goes way back with Major, and Batou during their military days
Togusa = detective, and former Intel / also co captain of S9

Okay that's a summary..
So how is 2045? Well..
The past entries blended 2D and 3D animation very well together. However in this new series it's taken on more of a full 3D experience. The only downside, is it lacks that flow, motion, details, and fluidity.

Story wise.. it's okay. It expects it's audience to be familiar with the characters and concepts. It is a bit vague on explaining who the team is if you're a newbie to the series.

It's set after the economy had fallen, humanity is fading, and the team has been disbanded. Major, and  the crew now act as mercenaries for hire. Going where the jobs are, however they are stateside. While Aramaki, and Togusa see still overseas.

Art and visuals .. the art style is remarkable, the character designs are made by cg artist Ilya Kuvshnov
But visuals in animation leaves a lot to be desired.
SAC_ 2045 is a completely 3dCG series.

While it does keep the series alive, it was admired for captivating visuals, atmosphere, art style, voice acting, soundtrack, storytelling, and drive to keep it's audience invested.

What SAC 2045 is..
12 episodes
It lacks musical flourish past series contained
Visuals and animation are so-so, it doesn't feel like a finished product
Available with Japanese audio, and English subtitles
However the dialog does not sync up with what's on screen. So you kinda feel behind because it moves fast.
There are muted moments (us longtime fans know of autistic mode, a term coined in SAC where the user is stationary, yet active on a different level. Able to communicate, but on another frequency. A closed channel of communication.
But in some scenes, there are subtitles but no audio?

Even though it's great to see this series return. I have mixed feelings after watching episode one. I will give rest of the season a try. But everything feels off,
including the opening and ending themes. I don't know who they were trying to grab as an audience, but it's not for me. From a screamo electric punk ska, to a mellow end theme with a pixy vocal. I can't think of anything to compare both too, because it does not fit the flow of the series.. just why?

The Series soundtrack feels okay, it's in the moment, but not mind blowing compared to what Yoko Kanno  was capable of with the previous series. Her sound style contained: energy, passion, heart, and soul.

It's difficult to recommend this one. I dislike the animation style, love the art, not a fan of most of the music, but story is okay... It's just.. trying to expand more of the series when there is not much to grow from. So it's a blank slate. Yes it's a fresh chapter, with familiar faces, but that's it really.  But the storyline has potential to keep a viewer going.

12 episodes of SAC 2045 are available to watch right now.

Castlevania Season 3 Review

Castlevania Season 3 Review
Frederator
Powerhouse Animation
Bootleg Universe
Warren Ellis productions
Music by Trevor Morris

Season 3 is more than just about Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard. But a continuation of their lives after the great battle last season. Now it's more about who they are, and the paths they create, finding themselves, and or losing oneself.

The writing expresses so much, each character feels alive. From heroes to villains, they all have a story, or emerging from within, a hidden darkness, to an unknown destiny. There are so many fascinating layers, some emerge from a moment, to a defining action that alters their personality altogether.

The voice talents.. so many to name, but each performance is phenomenal. From charismatic, to driven, broken, internal conflict, and unknown anger and release. There are calm, to powerful, romantic, and disturbing. It is literally an emotional rollercoaster, but worth the ride.

Ten episodes, but with so much depth, action, suspense, drama, horror, and romance, to unexpected darker themed territory. It explores the universe without Dracula, yet there is so much more than what's on the surface. From a time traveller, to a forgemasters journey & philosophical discussion with man & beast. It is more than vampires alone, but a vast world with so much to explore. Including Trevor & Sypha's relationship, and how they cope with supernatural entities, and their bond together, no matter what they face along the way. To Alucard's isolation, connect to hunters in training, and something sinister.

Season 3 redefines the series on so many levels, it is a must watch because it is an incredible experience. With stunning animation, music, storytelling, voice talents, it can be best summed up as a unique series. No longer just based on a classic game series, but a dynamic action / drama / horror / supernatural journey that must be experienced with your heart and mind as one.

Sonic The Hedgehog film 2020 Review

Back in 1991, a lot of us dared to dream anything was possible. Sure there was an animated OVA, and later a multiple season series dedicated to Adventure, and Heroes. To Boom, that found its way into everyone's hearts. And Mania, which it embraced the past, present, and future. But a live action film, that was beyond expectation.

Till this Valentine's Day weekend. We finally saw the big screen light up, with a blue hedgehog zipping across the screen. It is so wild, so many years later, it happened, and its excellent.

From the start, it dives into your gaming heart. The opening scenes, each one has nods to what the film is about: hope, friendship, faith, love, and wonder. None of these is just tacked on, its from dreams we all have, and the new generation.

The cinematography, sound design, visual effects, writing, everything that put this title together is perfection. The cast is excellent, voice talents are also amazing. This film is solid from beginning to end.

A film like this totally redefines: video game based projects  can beyond expectations. This is one of those films that contains so many layers, its magical, heartfelt, vast, action oriented, and most of all fun. It embraces the past, and future. It knows that fans that have been along for the ride, we are here, we finally made it. And new fans yet to be, they have a new memory, it makes them smile, lose their minds, and brings joy.

It is a gem, among so many titles out this year. It is a must see, and definitely must be shared with friends and family. Share that joy, embrace the fun. It is what Sonic is all about, and always will be

Death Stranding Review

Death Stranding Review
System: Playstation 4 / PC (Summer 2020)
Created by: Kojima Productions
A Hideo Kojima Game

(No spoilers here, just a review)

The Road Travelled
It has been four years since Kojima laid a foundation to a new path in life. From Konami, the restructure was a rebirth. A fresh start as it had been in the works, from MGSV to PT. But this is not the time to dwell on the past. Death Stranding is a new chapter for KP.

Beginning in 2016, the groundwork, team assembled, and project build was underway. A teaser for a different kind of experience was born. Giving a second chance, a rebirth. Given the influence of those he connected with on his journey's. DS was inspired by those Kojima, and his team created bonds with along the way. Near or far away, they became a part of that link.

Concept
As Sam Porter, a carrier, delivery is second nature. But within this unique world, one is cautious of traversing the unknown. From various landmarks, hillsides, cliffs, rivers, streams, to chasms, and unexplored territory left behind. The world, its a massive place, once filled with life, now desolate.

From the start we get adjusted to balance, carrying gear, and moving. However, a small bump in the road throws him off course, causing a  quick rescue of cargo. Learning how to control, the atmosphere drastically changes. Once the clouds shift, the rain comes. But this air,
sky, and Earth are very different from the world we know now. Its somewhere in the future, something happened.

This is an original title, only the Decima engine is a familiar.
But you choose the path you want to take, it is the destination that awaits.

Visuals
Everything you see from Sam's eyes, the open terrain, mountains, rivers, sands etc.. This can be explored. Every step you make is a part of the environment, which will change from time to time. Day to night, rain, sun, and other weather forms. The expanse constantly shifts as you cross the land. The colors are lush, from trees, rocks, rivers, grass, flowers that cross your path. The world is vast, yet feels alive, greeting you with open arms. But it is also affected
by other things, nature has evolved, but also become something different.

Controls
The setup is mapped to Sam's abilities (which change the further in the game). From picking up items, to balance, calling out, and more.
Cargo - a unique system that affects Sam's range of movement. If carrying little, it is possibly to run by pushing the L3 stick forward.
Balance is affected when carrying heavier items, a prompt will let you know to use the L2 and R2 triggers to keep Sam going.
Also something to notice, is the stamina meter. If the gauge is blue, you are fine. When low, if its changes turning red, you are close to perishing.Thankfully you have a backup item as a pick me up to replenish your health gauge

Extra note: the amount you push Sam also relates to his bladder, when need be you can find relief anywhere. Which will also replenish your stamina.

Audio
Surrounding you with lush sounds, from the trickle of water near or far, or to the sounds of birds cawing, to the rain. Every step has weight, to Sam's breathing, and heart rate. Everything feels alive. The world is in motion, along with you. Turn around, and the ambiance is overwhelming. Including the music with connects to what you feel. (more on this soon) There is nothing like the open world, you feel, smell, hear, and taste this all around you. It can be overwhelming at first, but give it time.

Soundtrack
There are in fact two soundtracks to this phenomenal game.
Timefall (with music by various artists)
From Chvrches hymn of the theme song, to Low Roar, and the amazing strings of Lindsay Stirling's violin. Every genre is explored. No two songs are alike. Each accompanies an emotion, or feeling.
Powerful, to moody emptiness. It covers every feeling you will connect to along the way. And some songs actually convert into melodies, as you traverse the music will also grow, shift, breakdown, change into something different every time. The soundtrack contains an amazing collection of music, totally worth a listen when you are not playing the game.

Original Score (music by Ludvig Forssell)
Tone, energy, immersion, suspense, fear, and dreaming. All of these can be felt within the composer's work. Each track connects to what Sam is experiencing, from loneliness, tension, and emotions. You are Sam, Sam is you. Plus the music contains its own personality, nuanced throughout from each theme, but also shifting, changing, involved with the gameplay, it fades or echoes. Calming, meditative, or serenity. As the sound envelopes, washing you with feelings. This world is alive, and so is the music. Early on, you can feel the tonal changes with every step.
The world connects to you, and you to it. There is no other feeling quite like it.

Extra words
I am a fan of Kojima's past and present titles, am humbled by this phenomenal title. There is no other game quite like this out there. I am enjoying my first playthrough, exploring this new world not that different from our own. But it has become something different, yet it allows you to choose a path. There is so much mystery, yet answers to the unknown, and more questions to resolve. It does not tell you, it is a part of you. Very few games connect to a player like that. This is however not a run and gun type of title. It is an experience, you take a breath, your heart beats, your pacing finds its way.

Game Review: Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania
Available now on: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
PC: 8/29/2017
Developers: Headcannon / Pagoda Games West / Christian Whitehead, supervised by Sonic Team & SEGA
Music by: Hyper Potions & Nitro Fun (intro and ending music), Tee Lopes (level bgm)

An intro from a classic Sonic fan:
I grew up with the classic consoles, NES, and Genesis. When a blug hedgehog whizzed by, and dashed across a colorful, and exhilarating level. There was nothing like it, and never would be. And the music was something unexpected. This series would go on to evolve, from 2D, to 3D. But what if it were to go back in time to explore one more time?

And by golly they are rings! (* phew, I feel better)

Anniversary...
Late last year, Sega teased something special during the annual Sonic Celebration. The last time something astonishing knocked everyone's jaw to the ground was Generations. Hard to believe its been seven years already. Flash forward to now, a then hidden surprise teased classic Sonic & pals (Tails & Knuckles) the excitement hit the roof. Like the trailer teased "going back, to what made the series fun".

Little Blue Planet
8/15/2017 release day, worldwide. Fans waited, and it was worth it. The most astonishing part about the game: it was fun again, and tough as nails. Old school difficulty, with new ways to explore, but also challenges that would test those old school reflexes.  (guess what, I love it!) This is the game we have wanted for years, and by golly it kicks our butts.

Right in the Feels
The intro screen, picks up where the teaser trailers left off. (online the crossover dev team along with Sonic's social media teased hints of what the in-game story was about)
Sonic, Tails & Knuckles banding together, on a strange elevator with 1, 2, 3 & M buttons. Sonic hits one, and off they go.

From there, the doors open, the gang embarks on another adventure. Sprawled across various worlds, they cross time and space exploring all sorts of levels (from the past, and the unknown). We're introduced to the new baddies called "the Hard Boild Heavies" a new armada of Eggman bots that have a grudge against our pals.

There's hints of the worlds we get to explore, but the trio never lets up. The pathways they cross, together to find out what connects it all together.

Green Hill Zone
Classic start up level, but with a twist. So many options lay before you. Take any route you want, even destroy obstacles along the way (What the!?) Yes, you can, and its totally worth exploring these vast levels, which are in fact massive. The details within the first stage, and the next is so diverse, colorful, expansive, an expressive. Every level feels alive (but wait a time aspect?) **will come back to this later.

As you clear each area, the music interchanges with the enviornment, giving a whole different energy to the in-game atmosphere.

Every stage is divided into seperate areas, and that old school design fits the flow of Mania. From classic adventures, to a slew of new levels (and some based on lost levels that never made it to the classic series). With challenges across the universe, some will test all you have to make it through from start to finish.

Boss: Every baddie has a theme, however there are various kinds sprawled throughout the game. A mix of old and new, and fun surprises along the way. No two are alike, and will keep you on your toes

Bonus stages: Grab enough rings (50), and find a super sized ring to rush down an Emerald. Or to go for another challenge, clear a checkpoint and hit the stars above it. See what happens if you can beat the tough blur sphere run. (careful may get dizzy)

Time is not on your side:  this is a spiritual sequel to the classic Sonic series. Sonic CD set a precedent that changed games forever. Mania in fact is its sequel, transitioning the connection from Generations (which would be.. let's say original Sonic's other crossover before this game) and connected to another chapter very soon.

Blast Processing:
Mania is a beautiful game, displaying what the past could deliver but on current generation hardware. Showing a vast array of colors, level design, enviornments, and  flow from a to b,
From Green HIll and beyond, the levels are insanely huge. The most intimidating thing is the timer (which has been our enemy since day one)

The most unique aspect about Mania, is the usage of 3D in the bonus stages. Its a great nod to the past, but also gives it that feeling we are crossing time and spaces with Classic Sonic and friends.

How to describe the visuals: Amazing, it feels like we've taken a step back in time, and the wait was worth it. And every level has incredible landscapes, traversing low and high, multi-tiered challenges that await at every turn. There is nothing quite like Mania.

Pushing buttons:
Like the past games, its setup in a simple way. Using the d-pad, up, down, left, and right. And Attack. That's it. But the best part, is that its reaction time is spot on. Every movement is fluid, for example:
Press up, and you'll see Sonic looking in that direction (the attention to detail, and expression is amazing)
Press down, and of course he will duck
Dash: In later games, Sonic Team utilized the ability for the hedgehog to charge his attack. Gaining enough momentum, release and he will go zipping across the level.
In Mania, it feels natural, almost second nature and comes in handy in various aspects. Once you find a rhythm, there is no stopping that flow (except for the occasional spikes, or out of bound areas.. and the dreaded losing a life

Music to my ears:
When the teaser debuted during the Anniversary celebration, the audience was floored. The bgm set up a new energy, with that old school spark. Including later videos with the in-game beats, they utilize that classic sound with timeless beats. That funky feeling is back, and it is so good. The music created for Mania is insane, from the intro screen (let it play, there are two songs). In-game, every level pays tribute to the past, with some new sounds blended in. Creating a fun vast atmosphere worth exploring more than once. Not listing zones, but the attention to detail will bring a smile to your face (even when you die on occasion)

Thanks for Playing:
How to sum up in a few words.. this is the Sonic game we waited for. Even when the series went 3D. The trip back to the classic rush, is superb. That feeling you get when you hear any song from the series, can bring back many emotions. (or want to dance). Sonic is a part of us, the energy, the sound, the attitude. Mania is a love letter, that even with new technology, revisiting the past can be a new adventure all over again.

#MGSV Re-Examine Key Scene "Shabani's Necklace"

MSGV Re-Examine
Key Scene "Shabani's Necklace"

*This scene is unlocked once you've passed Mission #30 at any time during a Side Op, this cinema will play through a pivotal moment in-game. And it might even make some rethink their theories about who Quiet really is as a human being.

A) Why is Kaz bitter about? He is a man of will, not liking to be interrupted when things are happening. But why the chemicals? For one, they are being used for something else later. But it requires a large amount of sustainable power, and circulation to keep it at a core temperature. Which is why you hunt down so many elements to sustain this mother base.

On the other side of things, he's never been happy being looked down upon. Some see him as a leader, other's are unsure. His dislike of Quiet and others leaves the team uneasy at times. Even this key scene is unsettling because we don't fully understand the man, until he talks to himself thinking it over "why"

I wasn't sure how to objectify Kaz's conscience at first. Because he rarely has a moment to actually show that he cares about anyone period. Or does he? In this scene alone, he actually shows emotion towards the kids, and Quiet. Just listen to the dialog carefully and you will understand the tone of his voice and why it goes to different levels.

B) What is Ocelot here for really? As a supervisor, aid, and backup if need be. Although Kaz won't admit it, Ocelot is his left hand, and Venom is his right. Acting as a watchful eye, keeping things in control. By this time in the story, Ocelot has already founded enough of a bond with the base, that many hold him in high regard, in fact over Kaz.

C) Quiet
How to simply put.. she cares about this new team that she's become a part of. Although they might not see eye to eye. In a blink of an eye she knows that no one else can get close to that chemical bath beneath the base. However, she feels for the kids, seeing their hearts breakin in front of her.

That's the hidden thing about Quiet, is compassion. Out of all the characters in this group, she is one of the few that has a big heart. Venom only learns at the last minute that she makes a daring move to save an object that those kids hold dear. Once she takes the dive, it feels like the world just ended on everyone's face.

(note: I read some mgsv players are wondering if she's a hallucination.. um really? you have watched cinematics like this right?)

Even the bgm takes a low to high point, as it shifts around the moment she recovers the necklace. It is a rewarded effort, but at the same time she is badly injured. Once helped, they get to sickbay to recover. (and eventually she will rejoin you after a set amount of time)

When writing this sequence, i wanted to make it clear that although there was chaos, a moment of positive energy is held dear. Even for a brief second, a moment of heroism is rewarded, but the pain that can be healed.

It also ties into the theme "the phantom pain" even though we are seperate at times, one thing can bring others together. A moment to refrain from hostility to one another, and look at something positive. Hope. Which is what Quiet is honestly about. And I find that quality about her something heartfelt and worthwhile that everyone should have in their heart as well. A positive to strive for, to have, and to share with others. It is what she is truly all about.

MGSV More Lost Notes

Greetings friends, sorry I haven't been writing here in awhile. But I thought I'd share a few notes about MGSV. And how something small, evolved.

MGSV - Silent Hills "The Other Side" the real story

Awhile back, on G4tv.com forums (back in its heyday) several gamers / writers penned "what if" scenarios. Some where vast, dark, and notched around characters of the long running supernatural tale. I thought on how to take it in a different direction. I penned an idea about a squad unit sent in to report about this "shadow world" that only came up in dark whispers.
The darkest part of the tale, is the encounter with the "dark" alternate world. It swallows up everyhing that is dark within the hearts of those dwelling that don't belong.
I didn't give the team a name per se, but their call signs related to earth elements or emotions. "Quiet' was a member of this team, but was not one of the "dark hearted" members that were enveloped by this madness. But at the same time, a parasite from the other side took over the rest, turning them into monstrosities of their former selves. No longer human, but supernatural entities.

The expedition team consisted of monitors "Dr. Clark" and "Code Talker". They were unable to get their team back the way they were sent in. A re-con team assists, but they don't return either, but as puppets wandering without souls. This unit is given the nickname "The Mist Unit" because they were formed within the "other side" of Silent Hill.

I find myself wondering why did I save "Quiet" when I wrote that tale. Something about the character was different. Pure of heart, noble, there for those who have her trust, and willing to do the right thing for a noble cause. How did she resist the outbreak? Hmm I never considered the thought, maybe its her humanity that saved her in the long run. Or its by chance her heart was not in the same place as the others within the team that investigated.

The term "Wolbacchia" referred to as the parasite codename was from an old book I remember reading. It was part of the bible times, during the "tower of babel" where all tongues were once one, until a certain man thought if they could "touch the heavens" it would change mankind for the better. But alas it did, it brought calamity and great change. As we were once one, we were no more. Split apart from our distant relatives, seeking asylum within our own background, but never feeling whole.

It does exist in our history, as we face the same thing every day. No matter our differences there are always issues because of something minor that breaks us down.

With that said, the cause and effect are also nightmarish. Given a certain language that can engulf an entire land or base. The consequences would be dire, in a sense bringing something back thought long dead for many generations. In that sense, the "dark world" from Silent Hill has spread across the world. And the only cure is to find the carriers of the disease.

I wrote in several storyline beats that Quiet would be a compass to find those "afflicted". Herein the scene that unfolds when various members within Diamond Dogs become carriers under the teams eyes. It is because of an infected tongue that causes the outbreak (thanks in part to Skull Face's project to unlock the human condition of language as a weapon) *the weapon to surpass Metal Gear, so to speak (not Eli btw).

End part I of II

Part II of II

"Truth and Consequences"
Code Talker as many know as of now is a very old man. Seen and experienced many things. However his involvement with this said "parasite" goes farther back. "The End" was another character inflicted with this parasite, however his symptoms kept him alive for a millenia, in turn it did the same for Code Talker. The passing of its cultures and dna can be copied and given to another, but under different circumstances it prevents the new host from transforming.

So the question is left open - Did Code Talker's DNA encode the parasite passed onto Quiet?
As it is hinted at that it enveloped her DNA, able to self-heal, adapt to sound, light, and all types of atmosphere. Literally making her a part of the earth. Weakness? To be defined. However water, she can not be submerged (so it is believed) but her body absorbs nourishing enzymes from various elements her body comes into contact with. To be honest, Quiet is "Mother Earth" in human form, an existence that cannot be darkened, but delivers light wherever it may go.

I wrote various notes in my concept with the "Silent Hill" dark world tie-in. But it also gained a life of its own through Quiet. I intended to adapt so much of the opposite through her abilities. Not a being of dark, but light, establishing a new entity that would forge a path with another equal to her powers.

"Enemy of my Enemy, is My Friend" Awakening's true title
In the opening scene fans are clamored to see a brutal moment where this lady donned in swat gear nearly kills us. Until a moment breaks where something stops her. Is it PTSD? Has she encountered this person before? Why is there so much hatred?

Rewind - Kaz's true identity.
I knew my script containing Kaz as the villain was eschewed somewhere within the exchange. However there are notes of it remaining. If you take notice of Quiet's reactions to either Kaz or Ocelot, she's seen these men before, but in a different lifetime. I built on the concept of Kaz having an eschema dual personality conflict. Where one voice, becomes two fighting within. Due to his demons, Kaz is having a mental breakdown on whom to trust, and where to place all the cards on the table.

(Note: for those who have played Prince of Persia: Two Thrones, you will understand the two voices battling within even more. This is where I teased the idea of Kaz's light / dark side conflicting with one another because of Robin Atkins Downes performance in that series)

We may not see Kaz's turning point at first, but it comes in moments. When it comes to core moments such as:
VS Quiet = Kaz and Ocelot duke it out over what you should, or should not do with the enemy character. If you choose to save her, and not take her life. In a sense Kaz dislikes having an old ally turned against his plans of what he intended to happen. Quiet is your eyes and ears about Kaz, and it does not settle with him well.

Huey = Kaz thinks ahead on catching up on old times, only to find out Huey's project has been active and against his back.

Parasite scenario = Kaz goes silent during the moment, but only erupts when your actions counteract his own within reason

These are just small examples, but I am more sure most MGS fans get the idea. But there is a much more alterered perspective on the "heads or tails" dynamic that resonates with V.

Ciper this, Ciper that
I really am not a fan of that part of the tale. Because it shows how much darker the intentions are within Diamond Dogs agenda. Its a nod to the "King & I" so to speak, a man with power, seeking to rule all, but finds humility when its too late. The other V writers wanted to expand on that dark chapter of Kaz's involvement with the rogue group.

True, it is about revenge, but who is he really pointing the finger towards? Is everyone against him or is it all in his mind? And to make matters worse, the loss of his arm and leg change his perception of everyone around him. A man on a mission that will only end in bloodshed.

Shalashaska
Ocelot's tale takes many turns in V. Once in a great while, he and Kaz duel over words. Eventually coming to a standstill. Offering aid to Venom when needed. It is one the rarest times we work alongside this mystery man since Snake Eater. We know some of his tale, but what he's really involved with will turn the tide of Outer Heaven. (see no spoilers)

When i worked Quiet into the story, it does entail that she had history with both Kaz and Ocelot in the past. They crossed each others paths, although on different sides, and sometimes the same one. As she wasn't always with team XOF. At the time she found herself having to trust others, but couldn't because they were never honest with her. Being manipulated to do different things she did not always agree with. Which is why her want to find an equal within Venom, gives her room to breathe.

(neat how that carried into her theme song)

"The Angel and the Devil"
This little facet into the story script becomes a huge part of that draw and connection between the two characters. Although they are from two seperate worlds, maybe its not the case. But they are a reflection of one another.

Who would think a simple concept considered a fanfic would become something more? I really dug deep into working out something special from a dark place. It just humbles me how many parts echo in the same way, no matter the belief or language, there is something to admire about a character like "Quiet" who is not defined by what she looks like, but what is in inside, a beating heart.

Out of all that darkness, something positive can be radiant and carry so much more meaning.

Final Fantasy XIIILR - Retry

FFXIII LR
Fabula Nova Crystallis Team
Square Enix

Several years ago, the FF development team brought its fans a new chapter in the long running rpg series. Some were satisfied, others demanded more, thus they did their best to deliver more roller coasters. But as a community are we beginning to take things for granted?

Each chapter dealt with obstacles, (pt1 Uprising), (pt2 Turn Left), (pt3 The End?). There is no "happy ending, quest over", there are tons of consequences these heroes overcome to regain their existence.

From the start I was grabbed by FF going multiplatform, it was kept locked away on the Playstation for some time. Although VII branched out and brought in a new gen of fans, I was part of the original fanbase. And that's where I find myself now, in limbo over indulging with an FF tale again.

But I fathom over what some fans say about this trilogy. To be honest, I find myself connecting with each one, in unique ways. (For example: pt 2 surprised me by how dynamic Serah becomes a heroine, in a way more over her warrior sister.) Some of the fanbase still fusses over how weak her character flaws are, from design, attacks, and development. (Seems like some are never satisfied unless its what they want) I don't find her lacking at all, more of a spiritual growth, given how much they overcome their humanity.

Although it is a trilogy, they are expansive yet seperate tales that expand time, and generations. Allies who were one heroes, some venture towards darker territory. While in the 3rd entry, Lightning (on a solo quest) has become the savior of mankind. Given 500 years have passed, everything she sought to change is undone tenfold.

What I also enjoy about LR is the dynamic storyline, it doesn't wait for you to do a to b, you have to save every precious moment, or battle to tackle what's ahead. The entire in-game world is counting on Light to help find its path. But not everyone wants to be saved, some choices have major consequences. (if you reach a game over, that's it, but wait you get another chance, but a total do-over) Overall the time dilation reaches its climax of 13 in-game days. (XIII being the last)

Although this entry may wrap the XIII saga, it is not the end of the FF series altogether. However it does tie into other entries that we haven't yet explored. It is rare that RPG titles can take a chance in delivering dynamic storytelling, and unique characters to connect with. And I find myself developing a love for Light's quest, of humility versus all odds in saving what life means to her. That is a positive note worth sharing over anything.

Final Fantasy XIII - Past, Present, and Future (part 1)

Let me begin with a lengthy article from my friends @ Hardcore Gaming 101. Chrono Trigger *This covers everything you need to know about the timeline adventure. First, yes time is relative to both titles. Second, you can gain allies from various timelines, and sometimes even enemies. Third, the ending depends on every decision you make, and allies aligned with. *note: this fellow gamer/ writers thought do not influence my own however

I have always felt that "cause and effect" were the main theme from the get go. But never as deep as this. To be honest, I have played CT on the SNES, and enjoyed its illustrious storyline that expands at every turn. It does get a bit complicated keeping track of where points A and B meet eventually.

**Ex note: When it comes to Japanese based role playing games, Chrono Trigger redefined what an RPG truly was meant to be, an experience like no other. Plus its meant to be explored, and indulge players in an immerse world beyond the 2D design. This was however back in the 90's, so take it as it is.

What makes XIII (in the current console generation) work is how its motivations work through each characters distinct personality. Of course, we don't get to see Serah's perspective till XIII-2 (and finding out she did see everything through Light's eyes). Changing their fates, Light disappears, Snow goes off on a mission, everyone's left on their own devices. (er wait hit the breaks!) Not your usual FF type of ending (note: some of the CT staff also worked on this 3 part saga in the FF universe).

Is it "Back to the Future"? Hmm I have been wondering how the writing team connects the dots with alternate timelines when paradoxes are fixed. But every outcome does change the pathway of everything that you have and haven't done thus far.

XIII-pt 3 "End of Days"
It cannot be defined any other way, Light faces her rekindled destiny and challenges everything and everyone she became a part of, friend or foe. What many may not realize right away is that fans actually had a bit of influence on the concept of the last story in the 3rd (and final) part of the XIII saga.

Castlevania - Lords of Shadow II (Game Review)

Castlevania – Lords of Shadows II
MercurySteam / Konami Core
2014

“What Was Will Be”
T’was the beginning of the end, Gabriel became a nightmare, a “Creature of the Night”. However, driven by blood to change his destiny, finds himself lost to time itself. Now awakened in the “future”, perhaps fate can be changed.

“Belmont’s Blood”
First, the story unfolds from his awakening, to revisiting his past duels, and eventually his son’s “evolution”. Now in a battle for supremacy, over all those “holy alcolyte’s” Dracula is not alone, as his birthright, the Castle itself beckons (but due to his choices, everything changed). **Footnote, if you haven’t played LoS, the introduction will deliver enough to get you caught up in what’s happened so far.

“A Horrible Night for a Curse”
This is the first time, we fans ever get to play a full fledged Dracula. (no Soma Cruz does not count, although he does gain abilities, and depending on choices made could become the Count) However, this might be the lost “War of 99” we’ve been scratching our heads about. But the timeline in LoS2 is lost in time, bending supernatural with the dark shadows.

“What is a man, a pile of secrets?”
By design, LoS2 is more linear than its predecessor. Taking on a more darker tone, closely knit to titles like Prince of Persia – Warrior Within, and Tomb Raider Underworld. The in-game engine delivers a vast amount of detail at every turn. Even with a few touches of “Silent Hill” mixed for good measure. (**without giving too much away, the real world is actually unaware of your presence, so as you explore your new playground it too will begin to change, even with the involvement of the Castle seeking its master one more time.

“Music soothes the savage dhampeal”
Lords of Shadows I pushed a few buttons by attaining a full-fledged orchestral sound. Although there were some hints of classic tunes by various notes. In LOSII, even more songs find themselves mixed by haunting melodies, even in crashing crescendo’s in various bouts, and environments also share in this design. (But those with a listening ear will spot them, oh and btw a bat told various fans that there is some hidden involvement with more diverse sounds. So its possible even more familiar songs accompany this new chapter’s soundtrack.)

“Vampyre Killer”
For fans of the classic series, this game may be your cup of tea. Although it may not rely on the IGA asthetic, it kicks butt none the less. However, if you love CV in any form, and enjoy something new for a change. Then by golly LoSII is a breath of fresh air, mixing concepts of old and new. And by all means, make this game a must own in your collection.

FFXIII Saga

Final Fantasy XIII Series

Awhile back, various media outlets, and zines predicted that the FF series might end someday. But they weren’t aware how much staying power and vitality its kept in the past generation of consoles / and PC power. Even with the grasp in international markets, Final Fantasy has captured the hearts and minds of fans young and old.

XIII however is a unique saga, covering Lightning (and friends) journey of evolution, survival, and fighting for being different. But at its core, it also touches on the reality of who is chosen as a hero or heroine. Plus the impact of; what sides are up in arms over those who take arms, or capable of greater things.

I have always enjoyed FF for its type of storytelling, even seeing how far this chapter has gone. In three tiered fractures of a vast adventure that parallels time, and consequences that everyone Lightning becomes a part of.

Even more diverse is the amount of monsters, to vast environments that push the in-game engine to unknown capabilities. To be honest, I have never seen any other type of RPG series push its engine this far. In character design, monsters, and areas of exploration (including timelines).

But what really pushed the XIII chapter is its effect on the entirety of the FF universe. (for the longest time some all fans have pondered what is this connection?) Including the fact that time shifts within the trilogy (as if connected to Chrono Trigger, including the fact the producer of that game also is a part of the XIII series).

Speaking of the bizarre number, the group named Red XIII have been a part of FF since VII. Only known as a mysterious group; that finds itself locked to fate, tied to unknown circumstances connected to various timelines. *Including Kingdom Hearts, with key members of their organization unveiling themselves. (but no knows what side they’re truly on)
(**Gifted Fal’Cie or L’Cie? We might learn someday)

On that note, whatever platform you enjoy gaming on, whether console or pc, if you loved FF in the past, or new to the series. This is a fun rollercoaster ride worth taking. And it may even parallel some of the most engaging storyline’s in years to come.

Castlevania Lords of Shadows (CV then and now)

Castlevania – Lords of Shadows Books I&II
MercurySteam / Konami / Kojima Productions
2012-2014

(A Look back and forward)
This series was in the past, filled with various locales, timelines, heroes and villains. However we’ve never grasped onto who the Belmont’s truly were. Sure we took on Dracula various amounts of times. But who was the villain we’ve fought against so many years?
LoS so far has explored the origins of Gabriel, from a quest of redemption to nightmares.

(Level Headed)
In past games, CV relied on funky design schemes, and obstacle ridden level design. Although it pushed the mark another series made (Capcom’s ™ *Devil May Cry ™) relied on a 3d map with overlay, and able to use the camera to examine the level you were currently exploring.

But like all series, they evolve, so DMC and CV also share the map design in common. In Symphony of the Night, however it was a 2D map of the castle, and its depths (in fact two maps, one of the normal and the alternate upside down version).

Speaking of maps, LoS also includes the classic map overlay that Simon Belmont’s quest used (and other Belmont’s to follow). Shown as an actual 2d plane, that displayed distance from a to b, a being where you started, to b where the quest would end, eventually that was the Castle Keep. Over the years, it grew into splitting paths, and would extend like a tree branch pointing out various areas that were hidden once you cleared an obstacle.

(Music Soothes the Savage Beast)
For a long time, CV’s soundtracks were composed by Konami’s Kukeiha Club, a crew of music composers’ that would collaborate on game series projects like Castlevania. With a mixture of classic tunes retouched, to original songs that were rarely heard in videogame music. Mostly taking on an atmospheric persona, these memorable songs would influence many more titles to push boundaries and become unique. (Nintendo’s ™ Metroid ™ has close ties to this similar design, using the in-game atmosphere to capture its essence and mood to push a player to “fight or flight”.)

LoS is a big departure from this design, it is now a full orchestra composed soundtrack. Although it does carry hints of the past games sound design. What has changed the most is the texture, taking on a more dramatic approach instead of a electronica rock, or ballads that the past games utilized on. (However some of the CV series ost’s actually carried orchestral themes.) But it didn’t rely on it from start to finish.

However, rumors have been shared that LoSII might carry the torch, and bring back some familiar sounds we’ve heard in the past.

(I Am the Night)
Speaking of change, as many learned by journey’s end who Gabriel came to be. But its hinted that LoSII, the past and present collide. (an actual full-fledged city nestled beside Drac’s keep) There is no telling, who might join this next chapter, but hinted that Zedd/Death, and Alucard (might even be playable?) reunite once more.

(Going Batty)
LoS has established its own timeline within the series. However, not all fans of the CV series are satisfied. For several since, a fandom community named “Operation Akumajou’ (demon castle). An organized group that demands: that CV returns to its classic gaming roots. (with IGArashi Koji’s vision in mind) **IGA was head producer for many years, and was part of the CV team with Dracula X (Richter’s first quest) (*there were two versions of this game, the Super-CD / Turbografix-16 **import only) (and the SNES edition, which was an alternate version of the game since it was a limited palette.)

Super vs Super -
Super CD was a well-established console overseas, the format could display audio and video, as clear as a movie playing on current systems. However, it had some load times to deal with. Although with enough memory, it was able to cut those down quite a bit.

Super NES however was cartridge based, so no wait, just pickup and go. But its biggest limitations were: level design, music, and controls were broken down to work with the system. That’s not to say it wasn’t challenging, it’s a tough game to beat.

Given how different the games were on two different systems. The Super-CD edition carried a full story, levels, and interchanging paths (this would later carry on within Symphony of the Night).

Another obstacle was the first 3D CV, on the Nintendo 64. Oddly enough it became a two parter, being one of the most toughest chapters around. With an odd control scheme, and a trouble-some camera. It also juggled with a funky gem system, and tricky difficulty in level and enemies spread throughout. However, it was a test of what’s to come.

Later 3D CV adventures like Lament of Innocence (another reboot), following a said Belmont to be the first, versus a friend who becomes Drac. And after Curse of Darkness, the aftermath, with a demon hunter who takes back his humanity after the loss of a loved one (eventually doing battle with an old friend).

Although these various chapters establish enough story to push the series a bit more. Something was missing.. to be honest I wonder why fans of the old CV want to go back. It was great for its time, but I have to be honest, being a longtime fan it needs more to make it worthwhile. LoS calls back to a lot of classic game designs, but also mixes up some unique ideas. It doesn’t feel lackluster, every bit of the game is a welcome challenge (or you can find new things hidden within).

I have to be honest, I actually love the character, level, music, and story design that LoS has delivered thus far. Sure it may not rely on the past adventures, but it definitely has delivered some unique surprises.

But on one footnote, that is why we have past games. We can replay them anytime and go back to when it felt right to us. It may not be for everyone like it used to be, but sometimes we need change. And with storytelling, it needs to evolve and explore new territory.

Lords of Shadows II might be the last CV game we might see for a while. But it will definitely deliver something unique for everyone, whether new or classic fans to explore.
